Born in Shanghai, Lily Qi moved to the U.S. at the age of 25. Nearly three decades later, she was elected in 2018 as the first Chinese-born state legislator in Maryland. She was re-elected in 2022 and is now running for a third term. She recounted her journey from China to the U.S. in a new memoir called Elected American: From Red China to Blue Maryland.
