Electric vehicle battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd, aka CATL, has already made significant technological leaps in 2026, some of which have drawn scrutiny in the United States. The largest lithium-ion battery manufacturer in the world, it recently unveiled a battery that it says can last more than one million miles on a 12-minute charge. But CATL’s designation as a Chinese military firm operating in the U.S. is a major obstacle for its ability to penetrate the American car battery market. Chairman John Moolenaar of the Select Committee on China last week challenged Ford over its plans to procure batteries from CATL, citing concerns around China’s “exploitation of key industries.” In late January, Texas banned CATL products from being used by any state employees or devices.
